Sultana Frizell grabs gold with record throw in women's hammer

Sultana Frizell breaks the Commonwealth Games record on her way to gold in the women's hammer.

Canada's Sultana Frizell threw a Commonwealth Games record of 71.97m as she stormed to gold in the women's hammer this evening.

Frizell, 29, dominated the event recording four throws in excess of 70m and leading throughout the competition, with Team England's Sophie Hitchon securing bronze.

"The first few rounds were a little jerky and I only got it together later on. That is what happens sometimes," Hitchon told BBC Sport.

"I am amazingly pleased with a medal, but I just always want the very best as an athlete."

Julia Ratcliffe of New Zealand won silver with a distance of 69.96m.
