Jay Gruden: 'Robert Griffin III is lacking confidence'

Gruden: 'Griffin III lacking confidence'

Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden has revealed that the reason behind his decision to bench quarterback Robert Griffin III is that he believes he is lacking in confidence.

Gruden has opted to start Colt McCoy on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, with the Redskins winning just one of Griffin's five starts so far this season.

"I just think he needs a little bit more time in this system with the verbiage and the plays to sit back, take a step back and learn, and when he gets back in there he'll be a lot more decisive, hopefully, and ready to roll," Gruden told the media.

McCoy has led the Redskins to a comeback win over Tennessee, while he also started in an upset win at Dallas and stepped in at times during Griffin's absence with an ankle injury.

However, Washington have since lost three straight games, all started by Griffin, and as a result they have fallen to 3-8.
