A look at some of the most notable underdogs in recent Super Bowls.

The last time a team won without a first-round bye was back in Super Bowl XLVII. In an epic face-off between the Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers, the former resisted an epic 49ers comeback to claim victory.

Repeating the same success story is not easy for two apparent reasons. First, the teams have to compete for about 33% more games without the first-round bye advantage. Second (and more obvious), the teams with a bye have earned it through better performance. This means that they have already proven their odds to be a safer betting choice.

It has been seven seasons since that last time a no-bye team won the Super Bowl. The odds are known to shift favorably for the underdogs.

Here are some of the most notable underdogs in recent Super Bowls.

Tennessee Titans
Let's start with the Tennessee Titans. They surprised everyone by upsetting the favoured New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium by stealing a page from their own playbook. But it wasn't easy. The Patriots' solid defence refused to crumble, but then Titans' RB Derrick Henry rushed for a total of 182 yards, including a 22-yard screen pass, that won them the game. With QB Ryan Tannehill fit and healthy, and back on the roster, they had a solid standing to make their mark.

Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs had an impressive offence to boast. They had to endure a rough patch of four home game losses. However, they significantly improved their defence after that and won their last six games, bringing their tally up to 66 points. They clearly proved their ability to adapt, even when facing terrible odds. Their offence was lacking, though, especially when it fell to subpar during the later stages of the game. They lost many matches by just a touchdown or even less.

Philadelphia Eagles
Things were not looking up for the Philadelphia Eagles at the start. Their three-game losing streak against the Patriots, Seahawks, and Dolphins didn't help either. Despite the seemingly hopeless situation, their final four wins (twice against the NY Giants) propelled them forward. They even upset the third-seeded Chicago Bears 16-15, after which they were halted at 14-20 by New Orleans Saints. Their ability to go toe-to-toe against strong contenders and emerge victorious makes them serious underdogs in the recent Super Bowl.

Seattle Seahawks
When mentioning the underdogs, one can't just forget about the Seattle Seahawks. With a record of 11-5, they displayed impressive offence and defence for an underdog team. Their inconsistent performance fueled by their three losses of their last four games just goes to show that they still need to focus on delivering stable performance. Their QB Russell Wilson was sacked 48 times last season, which proves that their defence and plays need perfection.
