Jack Whelbourne has said that not having a fast start held him back in his 500m short track speed skating heat at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The Briton stumbled early on and was unable to recover in time, finishing last in his heat this morning.
The 22-year-old told reporters: "It was a hard field, we had two silver medallists and guy who has won a B final, so it was a very high calibre race to be part of.
"I'm not the fastest starter and they turned the pace on early. I just had to bide my time and unfortunately when I tried to make my move it didn't open up for me.
"When I saw where I was drawn and who I was drawn against, I just laughed. However, there are no excuses, you have to beat everyone."
Whelbourne became the first British skater to make a 1500m Olympic final earlier in the Games, but he fell in the final and injured his ankle.
