Foreign-language banners allowed at Sochi Games

Spectators at the Winter Olympics in Sochi will be allowed to take foreign-language banners to the games after the Russian prime minister relaxes a decree on what is allowed at sporting events.

Spectators at the Winter Olympics in Sochi will be allowed to take their own banners to events after the Russian government relaxed the laws of what is prohibited at sporting events in the country.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has amended his own decree, which means that fans can now bring foreign-language banners to venues at the Games.

Medvedev imposed a decree in December that outlawed banners in foreign languages unless the owner provided an official translation and filed it with local officials for approval.

The decree is part of the government's efforts to bring order to Russian stadiums, particularly at football matches where fans have previously displayed banners that contained racist or derogatory statements.
