China edge out Greece on penalties in final match

China secure sixth place in the women's water polo at the World Swimming Championship with a penalty shootout victory over Greece after a 9-9 draw in Kazan.

China have finished on a high in the women's water polo at the World Swimming Championship as a 13-12 penalty shootout triumph over Greece in Kazan this afternoon saw them secure sixth place.

Niu Guannan capped a fine performance with five goals to lead her side to victory and help China secure back-to-back wins to end the tournament after Wednesday's victory over Spain.

China led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter but a double from Ioanna Charalampidi and an Eleftheria Plevritou goal saw Greece level the scores at 5-5 by half time.

The second half was just as tight as the first, and when the scores finished level on 9-9 at the end of the fourth quarter it was left to a penalty shootout to decide the match.

China goalkeeper Yang Jun was the hero as she saved efforts from Plevritou and Christina Tsoukala to win the match in dramatic fashion.

Later today, Australia will face Italy to determine who secures the bronze medal before USA and the Netherlands go head to head for the gold.
