David Ferrer safely through to Mexican Open second round

Number one seed David Ferrer secures a straight-sets victory against Mikhail Kukushkin to book his spot in the second round of the Mexican Open.

David Ferrer has beaten Mikhail Kukushkin in straight sets to progress to the second round of the Mexican Open.

Both players hit the ball well at the start of the first set, although Ferrer missed the opportunity for an early advantage when he surrendered three break points.

However, the Spaniard did convert two later in the set to take it 6-2.

The second set was similar, with both men holding their first two service games. Kukushkin was unable to maintain his form, however, and was broken again to go 4-2 behind.

Ferrer then failed to take a match point, but made no mistake on his service game to wrap up a 6-2 6-3 win.
