David Ferrer retirement puts Kevin Anderson through at Mexican Open

Ferrer retirement puts Anderson through

Kevin Anderson has progressed to the semi-finals of the Mexican Open following David Ferrer's retirement midway through the second set due to injury.

The Spaniard was forced to withdraw with the scores at 2-6 4-2 after he suffered an abductor problem.

He had earlier taken the first set courtesy of breaks in the sixth and eighth games, but Anderson, aided by Ferrer's fitness troubles, was forcing his way back into the match before its premature ending.

Anderson, who is currently ranked 21 in the world, will now play Alexandr Dolgopolov in the last four.

Following Ferrer's retirement, Andy Murray, who faces Gilles Simon in the quarter-finals later today, is the highest seed left in the draw in Acapulco.
