Roger Federer becomes the most successful player in Grand Slam history in terms of wins by defeating Romania's Adrian Ungur.

Roger Federer beat the record of wins in Grand Slam tournaments set by Jimmy Connors this afternoon by defeating Adrian Ungur 6-3 6-3 6-7 6-3 at the French Open.

Today's victory has taken former world number Federer to 234 victories in tennis's biggest tournaments.

The Swiss player started positively against Ungur, who has recently broken into the top 100 for the first time in his career.

The Romanian was unable to prevent Federer from dominating, surrendering his serve on one occasion to hand world number three Federer a 6-3 success in the opening set.

Federer went on to dominate the second set by an even greater margin, eventually running out a 6-2 victor.

However, Ungur responded positively in the next set and even had two set points when leading 5-4. The world number 92 was unable to press home that advantage though, as Federer managed to force a breaker.

Both players traded serves early in the tie-breaker, until Federer claimed a mini-break to take a 5-4 lead, before winning the next point on his serve to hand himself two match points.

Once again Ungur showed his mettle, surviving both match points before serving out 8-6 to claim the third set against the odds.

He was unable to build upon that momentum at the start of the fourth set, losing his serve to Federer at the first time of asking.

Federer made the most of that slender advantage, taking control of the set to seal his passage into round three by six games to three.
