Missy Franklin wins 100m backstroke gold

United States swimmer Missy Franklin has won a closely-contested 100m backstroke final to take gold with a time of 58.33s.

Great Britain's Gemma Spofforth swum a good race but could not get herself on to the podium, finishing fifth with a time of 59.20s.

Second and third placed Emily Seebohm of Australia and Aya Terakawa of Japan were both within half a second of Franklin, but the American was impressive in the final 50m.

Seebohm's time was 58.68s andTerakawa managed 58.83s.
