Abbie Wood: 'Winning European Games gold was surreal'

Abbie Wood says that winning the 4x100m medley gold medal at the European Games in Baku was "surreal".

Abbie Wood has said that winning her 4x100m medley gold medal at the European Games was "surreal".

The Brit finished in a time of 4:41.97, two seconds ahead of Italy's Ilaria Cusinato.

"It's my first European medal and I'm so excited. It's just surreal. The breaststroke hurt a lot and the pressure was on me because I qualified fastest," Wood told reporters.

"I can't believe it. I didn't expect it. I was hurting so much after my heats and I never normally qualify fastest, which made me even more nervous.

"With Team GB doing so well here [in the diving] we felt we had to as well."

The 16-year-old spoke to Sports Mole after her victory, which can be read in full here
