Van der Burgh breaks 100m breaststroke record

South Africa's Cameron Van der Burgh has set a new Olympic record in the men's 100m breaststroke.

The 24-year-old booked a place in the final of the event with a finish time of 58.83 seconds in the semis.

Fabio Scozzoli of Italy recorded the second-fastest time of 59.44, with New Zealand's Brenton Rickard coming in third at 59.50.

Team GB duo Craig Benson and Michael Jamieson bowed out of the competition despite the latter taking third place in his heat.

The men's 100m breaststroke final takes place tomorrow evening (July 29).
