England's Chris Walker-Hebborn: 'The pressure is off after gold-medal triumph'

Team England's Chris Walker-Hebborn tells Sports Mole that he is "hugely confident" ahead of tonight's 50m semi-final.

Commonwealth gold medallist Chris Walker-Hebborn has admitted that he is "hugely confident" heading into tonight's 50m backstroke semi-final after winning gold in Glasgow last night.

The 24-year-old scooped a gold medal in the 100m backstroke at Tollcross in 53.12s - a new Commonwealth record.

Following last night's triumph, the Brit, who has 'Per Aquam Ad Gloriam' (through water to glory) tattooed on his chest, took to the pool this morning to finish at the top of his 50m heat in a time of 25.12s.

After posting the time, Sports Mole grabbed a quick chat with Walker-Hebborn to discuss his hopes of earning another medal and if he has recovered from last night's win.

First place in your 50m heat - you must feel confident ahead of tonight's semi-final?

"Yeah, the pressure is kind of off - the main event was last night, so I just want to progress through the rounds. I'm a little bit tired this morning, I'm going to go back and sleep now, but yeah, it should be fun tonight and hopefully make it through into the final."

Was it easy for you to re-focus after last night?

"Yeah, I'd like to podium in this as well, but 50m is a bit more of a splash and dash, so it's much harder to pinpoint how it's going to finish, but I'm hugely confident going into this. I just want to get some rest now and re-focus again."

I'm assuming you didn't have an early night then?

"No, I didn't get back into the Village until half 11 and then I was talking to my parents, and by the time I got to my room, I just couldn't switch off, so I think it was about half three I finally fell asleep. I've just been trying to get on with it this morning and see how tonight goes."

England currently have 11 Commonwealth medals, while Australia top the table with 18.
