Bronte pips sister Cate to 100m gold

Bronte Campbell has pipped her sister Cate Campbell to Commonwealth Games gold in the 100m freestyle final.

Cate had been the hot favourite heading into the race, having won gold in all three of her events to date, but her younger sibling took top place on the podium having swam a time of 52.27 seconds - a new Games record.

Cate had led at the split, with Bronte in third, but eventually came in at 52.69 seconds - around four-tenths of a second ahead of Canada's Taylor Ruck, who took bronze and denied the Aussies the chance to claim another trifecta in the pool.

The third Australian competitor, Shayna Jack - part of the gold-medal winning 4x100m freestyle team - had to settle for fourth place with a time of 53.83 seconds.

Team England's participant in the race, 21-year-old Anna Hopkin, finished last on 55.03 seconds.
