Australia smash world record in freestyle relay

Australia set a new world record to claim gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay in the last final of the day in the pool.

The quartet of Emma McKeon, Cate Campbell, Melanie Schlanger and Bronte Campbell finished in 3:30.98 to beat the previous record by just under a second thanks to a strong display in the second half of the race which saw them cruise away from their rivals.

Fran Halsall, Amy Smith and Siobhan Marie O'Connor and Becki Turner were almost five seconds behind the Australians, but it was a new British record for the England squad as they claimed silver ahead of Canada.

It was a special night for McKeon, who had earlier picked up a gold after winning the 200m freestyle final.
