Matthew beats Willstrop to take gold

Nick Matthew has defeated fellow Team England competitor James Willstrop to win his second successive men's singles Commonwealth Games gold medal.

The 34-year-old, who carried the flag for England in last week's opening ceremony, has only recently returned from knee surgery but battled through to win the final 3-2.

Matthew claimed the first game by an 11-9 margin, despite eyesight issues which saw him having to put in a new contact lens during a break in play.

The defending champion did not have it all his own way, however, and Willstrop took the second game 11-8 to level the contest overall.

The match was to go the whole distance with the next two games being shared. Matthew won the third 11-6, but Willstrop - who has now lost the last 25 meetings between the two - hit back 11-6 in the fourth to take the score to 2-2.

Matthew came out of the blocks the faster of the two in the decider to build up a 5-3 lead, leaving Willstrop hanging on throughout before eventually prevailing 11-5 to secure gold.
