Ofisa Treviranus to captain Samoa in historic Test against All Blacks

Ofisa Treviranus will captain Samoa when they host New Zealand in July's historic Test match.

London Irish flanker Ofisa Treviranus will captain Samoa in their historical Test against New Zealand.

The Test is the All Blacks' first in the Pacific Islands and Treviranus admitted to being surprised when he heard about his appointment.

"When I heard that, I was a little nervous," he told TVNZ. "I thank God for this opportunity. It's not going to be an easy one. I didn't expect this to be honest.

"It is a great honor to be asked to captain this side as we prepare to host the All Blacks. I know that my primary job is to earn my own selection into the starting team and then from there I will do my best to provide the leadership that's been asked of me."

Flanker Treviranus, 31, made his debut for Samoa in 2009 against Japan after being a successful member of Samoa's sevens team.

The Test between Samoa and New Zealand will take place in Apia on July 8.
