The boot of Jimmy Gopperth has helped Newcastle Falcons to a vital 26-25 win against Gloucester Rugby at Kingsholm Stadium.
The match got off to an explosive start when Olly Morgan touched down for the visitors in the first minute. Freddie Burns successfully kicked the extras.
A Gopperth penalty three minutes later got the Falcons on the scoreboard before Jordi Pasqualin's try, converted by Gopperth, gave the hosts a 10-7 lead.
Two penalties from Burns put Gloucester back ahead before James Simpson-Daniel's try, combined with Burns' conversion, stretched their advantage.
James Fitzpatrick's converted try gave the home side a lifeline as they went in 17-20 at the break.
Three more Gopperth penalties before the hour gave Newcastle a 26-20 lead, but Scott Lawson's try on 65 minutes edged them closer.
However, Burns was unable to make the kick and the North East side held on for the win.
Despite remaining bottom of the Aviva Premiership table, Newcastle are now only four points from safety.
