England's top Premiership rugby sides intend to withdraw from the Heineken Cup over organisation disputes.

The governing body of England's top clubs has said that they intend to pull out of next season's Heineken Cup competition.

The decision comes after disagreements over how the tournament is organised. French clubs have also threatened to withdraw from the cup but the idea is seen as a move to force others to negotiate, as two years' notice needs to be given before going through with such an action.

"We hope that there will now be an urgent dialogue," said Premiership Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty.

McCafferty also said that he hopes talks can begin soon regarding "the future of European cup rugby, including qualification, competition formats and ambition to expand into new markets".

The intention of Premiership Rugby to exit the competition will affect sides such as Northampton, Saracens, Gloucester, Bath, Harlequins, Leicester and London Irish, all of whom competed in the 2011-12 tournament.
