British and Irish Lions overcome New South Wales Waratahs challenge

The British and Irish Lions earn a 47-17 victory over the New South Wales Waratahs in Sydney.

The British and Irish Lions have earned a 47-17 victory over the New South Wales Waratahs in Sydney to keep up their winning start to their tour of Australia.

Warren Gatland's side scored five tries at the Sydney Football Stadium to give them five wins out of five.

Jonny Sexton's early try was cancelled out by Tom Carter before Leigh Halfpenny touched down on the stroke of half time for the visitors.

The Welsh full-back converted both of his side's tries and scored three penalties during an entertaining opening 40 minutes as the Lions went in 23-10 ahead at the break.

Halfpenny added the extras to his own score at the start of the second half, but the Waratahs fought back when Carter went over for the second time in the match.

Another penalty was kicked over by Halfpenny soon after, while Tom Croft's try on 55 minutes saw the Lions pull away.

The Lions' fifth try of the game came with eight minutes left on the clock as Jonathan Davies touched down before replacement Owen Farrell scored the conversion.

A successful evening for the Lions was marred towards the end of the contest when Jamie Roberts was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.
