Team GB's rowing golden girls hope to inspire nation

Great Brtiain's first gold medallists of London 2012, women's rowing pair Heather Stanning and Helen Glover say that they hope their win can inspire a nation.

Great Britain's first ever gold medallists in women's rowing have said that they hope their win can inspire the nation.

Heather Stanning and Helen Glover claimed Team GB's first gold medal of the Olympic Games with a stunning performance in the women's pair.

The girls were reserves just two years ago but have never looked back since joining together as a team, dominating a tough field to make history.

Glover said immediately following the win: "If I can do it, take the chance, in not just rowing, but anything."

Stanning, a Royal Artillery Officer, was shocked and delighted at the result.

She said: "I want to collapse I'm so overjoyed - I'm probably talking rubbish now. We've got out ahead throughout the season and we wanted to do that today, and not give anything back.

"Helen was telling me to keep on going. Thanks for all the support from the troops in Afghanistan, I'm so proud to be associated with you."

Team GB claimed victory in a time of 7:27.13 to better their world silver medal performance.
