Oxford cox "devastated" by Boat Race "tragedy"

Oxford cox Zoe de Toledo has described the 158th Varsity Boat Race as "a tragedy" after 35-year-old Trenton Oldfield's protest disrupted proceeding on the River Thames.

Oxford cox Zoe de Toledo has described the 158th Varsity Boat Race as "a tragedy".

Cambridge won the race by a comfortable distance after Oxford had broken an oar, however the traditional post-race presentation ceremony was abandoned because of an incident which halted the contest for almost 30 minutes.

35-year-old Trenton Oldfield swam across the boats' paths after 10 minutes and 30 seconds of the race, which was then held up as the Australian was removed from the water and taken away by police.

"We are devastated that we did not get the chance to find out what we were capable of achieving in the second half of the race and many of us will never have that opportunity again," said De Toledo.

"Ultimately it is just a tragedy that neither crew had the opportunity to display their best ability over the full course.

"But while I believe I will remember the remarkable events for all the wrong reasons, I'd like to say how proud I am of the eight true gentlemen who I had the pleasure to cox in the Boat Race."

Oldfield, who claimed to be protesting against elitism, was charged with a Section Five public order offence.
