The United States has issued a travel alert for Americans attending the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

The alert, issued by the US State Department, warns of cybersecurity threats and says that Americans should have "no expectation of privacy" while at the Games.

The department said: "US travelers should be aware of cybersecurity threats and understand they have no expectation of privacy when sharing sensitive or personal information utilising Russian electronic communication networks."

The alert also warned travellers that "Russian police officers have the authority to stop people and request identity and travel documents at any time and without cause."

Americans in Sochi were advised to carry their passports, Russian visas and other important documents at all times.
