Sochi gold medals to have meteor fragments

The winners of the gold medals in events taking place on Saturday at the 2014 Winter Olympics are in for a special treat.

That's because they will all get a bonus medal each that will have a piece of the giant meteor that fell on Russia exactly a year ago embedded in it.

On February 15, 2013, a 65ft wide asteroid crashed on the Games' host country, injuring 1,500 people and causing damage to infrastructures.

The asteroid, travelling at a speed of 42,500 miles per hour when it hit the Earth's atmosphere, exploded over the Chelyabinsk Oblast region of Russia and broke into thousands of fragments, which rained down on the area on this day last year.

Seven gold medals are up for grabs on Saturday.
