Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he was given beatings while he was at school in Glasgow.
The 72-year-old, who attended Broomloan Road Primary, was sent the belt that he was beaten with by the nephew of his favourite teacher Elizabeth Thomson after she died.
"It's in my study," Ferguson told the Times Educational Supplement. "My grandchildren are terrified of it. Six from that belt and you were in absolute agony.
"I used to try to draw my hand away, but that was the sort of punishment you had if you stepped out of line. In my case, it was usually for fighting in the playground."
The Scotsman, who retired from management last summer, described his former teacher as an "inspiration" to him.
