Manchester City 'pushing for 39th Premier League game'

Manchester City are reportedly "pushing" for the idea of introducing a 39th Premier League game overseas.

Manchester City are said to be pushing for plans to introduce a lucrative 39th game to the Premier League season.

Proposals for an extra round of fixtures have long been touted as a way to exploit the league's global appeal, with the additional 10 fixtures likely to be played overseas.

The games would not only increase the clubs' individual popularity in foreign markets but would also bring in significant extra revenue from matchday activity and broadcasting rights.

According to the Daily Mail, City are among "several" top-flight sides who are in favour of the idea and are keen for the logistics to be explored.

Many clubs and fans are opposed to the idea, however, and in 2014 Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore revealed that he regretted making the suggestion, saying: "I've got the scars all the way up my back."

Earlier this year, La Liga revealed that it was actively looking into the possibility of staging regular-season matches outside of Spain.
