Espanyol firmly deny match-fixing claims

Espanyol release a statement denying that they helped fix a La Liga match against Osasuna last season.

Espanyol have firmly denied suggestions that they helped to fix a La Liga match against Osasuna last season.

The Spanish club's 1-1 draw against Osasuna last May is due to be investigated by Spain's Professional Football League amid accusations of wrongdoing.

According to reports in Spain, the two teams shook on a draw before the match, but that has been denied by Espanyol's vice-president Rafael Entrena via an official statement.

"We want to make it absolutely clear that RCD Espanyol de Barcelona have had no involvement in any match-fixing or irregularities," read the statement.

"We defend the purity and sportsmanship of the competition, now and forever. RCD Espanyol de Barcelona will collaborate actively and decisively with both prosecutor in his case and all sports authorities to take the investigation of these facts to its conclusion."

"Let us make it absolutely clear that the club, RCD Espanyol de Barcelona, have no relationship with any irregularity. If the investigation concludes that someone has committed an irregularity, they will face the [appropriate] consequences."

Osasuna were still relegated to the Segunda last season.
