Labour MP Paul Flynn slams speech of England batting coach Graham Gooch

MP blasts Gooch's speech

Labour MP Paul Flynn has hit out at Graham Gooch following the England batting coach's speech at Celtic Manor.

Gooch spoke at a corporate function in Newport West earlier this week, but Flynn sparked controversy by criticising the coach's jokes and claiming that he "patronised women" during his speech.

Flynn wrote on Twitter after the event: "Graham Gooch, famous for apartheid-backing tours, patronised women, Pakistanis, Aussies with funny-if-you're-drunks jokes at breakfast today."

The Daily Mail also quotes Flynn as saying: "It was seriously unfunny. He said all England's opponents cheated, particularly the Pakistanis and Australians and gave the impression you had to explain the rules of cricket to women."

Newport West is Flynn's constituency.
