Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was voted best international newcomer at the Sport Journalists' Association awards on Thursday.

Chamberlain received the prize, picked by the country's sports writers, at a gala ceremony held at the Tower of London.

The 19-year-old admitted that he can scarcely believe the progress he has made for club and country in the last 12 months.

He said: "It's a massive honour to win anything at the moment. It's been a whirlwind year for me – everything's come quite quickly.

"I'm starting to find now the pressure of professional football at the top level with the highs and lows, and obviously at the moment we're on a bit of a low, but this is a nice little pick-me-up.

"I love what I do every day, I love playing football and hopefully I'll continue to that. And obviously if we win some stuff that helps."

The Gunners teenager was the only football personality to win an award on a night dominated by Great Britain's Olympic and Paralympic teams.
