Beslan Mudranov wins Russia's first gold at Rio Olympics

Russian judoka Beslan Mudranov wins his country's first medal of the Rio Olympics by claiming gold in the men's -60kg.

Russian judoka Beslan Mudranov has won his country's first gold medal at this summer's Olympics.

The debate as to whether Russian athletes should be allowed to compete in Rio overshadowed the build-up to the Games, with the International Olympic Committee deciding that the governing body of each individual sport could make their own ruling.

Judo was one of a number of federations to allow all Russians to perform, and Mudranov kicked his country's medal tally off on the opening day with a gold in the men's -60kg.

Mudranov came up against Kazakhstan's reigning world champion Yeldos Smetov in the final, and after five minutes nothing could separate the pair.

That took them to the golden score, which Mudranov claimed after 44 seconds with a leg sweep that earned him the top prize.
