Middleton: 'We wanted to avenge penalty defeat'

England hockey captain Barry Middleton has revealed that his side were determined to avenge their penalty defeat to New Zealand four years ago at the Commonwealth Games.

Middleton and his team did get their revenge as they secured the bronze medal as the Three Lions edged out their opponents in the shootout, with keeper George Pinner making two crucial stops.

"Four years ago, we lost to New Zealand on flick penalties so it's the other way around now," Middleton told BBC Sport.

"We're trying to turn the tide on the English losing on penalties. We've started to do it and the girls have started as well. We've got the ability and skill."

Australia won the gold medal in the event as they defeated India, who took the silver.
