Max Whitlock becomes first male to win a gold for Great Britain in a World Championships after topping the pommel horse table.

Max Whitlock has become the first man to win a gold for Great Britain in a World Championships after topping the pommel horse table in Glasgow.

Whitlock, 22, scored 16.133 points, 0.1 points ahead of teammate Louis Smith who grabbed silver.

The result follows a similar triumph earlier in the week after Whitlock and his team won the men's first-ever team medal with silver.

"Starting with the silver as a team, everyone has been on such a high," Whitlock told reporters. "We could not ask for anything better and now we are world champions."

Smith, 26, was favourite having qualified top of the apparatus.
