British Gymnastics suspends Louis Smith for two months for 'mocking Islam'

British Gymnastics bans Louis Smith for two months for breaching standards of conduct by appearing to mock Islam in a video.

British Gymnastics has suspended Louis Smith for two months for breaching standards of conduct after appearing to mock Islam in a video.

The 27-year-old, who won an Olympic silver medal at Rio 2016, was filmed shouting "Allahu Akbar" and pretending to pray in a video with fellow gymnast Luke Carson.

The footage is believed to have been taken at the Kettering Park Hotel in Northamptonshire while the pair were attending the wedding of gymnast Dan Keatings.

Smith apologised for his behaviour, describing his actions as "thoughtless" and claimed that he has learnt a "valuable life lesson".

As a result, Smith, who is a well-known personality having won a silver and bronze medal at London 2012, will serve a suspension, while Carson has been given a reprimand due to not having any previous incidents on his record.

British Gymnastics chief executive Jane Allen said: "It is regrettable that following a historic summer of achievement, the organisation finds itself in this difficult position with two high-profile members in breach of our standards of conduct.

"As the custodians of the integrity and values of the sport, we have had no choice but to act responsibly and refer this case to an independent panel for their review and determination.

"Whilst both individuals showed remorse following the incident, we hope in the future they use their profile to have a positive impact on sport and communities."

Smith has also won European gold and Commonwealth gold on the pommel horse.
