Great Britain's men win bronze in the gymnastics

Great Britain claim Olympic bronze

Great Britain's five-man gymnastics team claimed a bronze medal from the artistic event at the North Greenwich Arena this evening.

The quintet of Sam Oldman, Louis Smith, Daniel Purvis, Kristian Thomas and Max Whitlock looked to have earned bronze following their performance during the final floor discipline.

However, an error from Japan's Kohei Uchimura during his dismount from the pommel horse saw his nation slip from second to fourth. As a result Team GB moved up to second, while Ukraine were promoted to the bronze medal position.

The Japanese appealed the score that was handed to Uchimura though, which the officials eventually accepted after several minutes of deliberation.

As a result, Japan were restored to second spot, while Team GB were demoted to third. Ukraine missed out on a medal altogether.

Defending champions China retained top spot with a consistent performance over the five disciplines.

Overall standings:

China: 275.997 Japan: 271.952 Team GB: 271.711 Ukraine: 271.526 USA: 269.952 Russia: 269.603 Germany: 268.019 France: 265.441
