Whitlock claims silver at World Championship

Max Whitlock has capitalised on his second chance in the all-round discipline at the Gymnastics World Championship by winning silver in the final in China.

The 21-year-old had initially failed to come through the qualifying round but he earned a reprieve when teammate Nile Wilson was forced to withdraw through injury.

Whitlock, who competed at London 2012, took an early lead in the final but he soon found himself behind eventual gold medallist Kohei Uchimura, who won his fifth all-round crown in a row.

However, after a well-executed floor routine earned him second ahead of Yusuke Tanaka, Whitlock equals the best finish by a British representative in the all-round event with Dan Keatings also ending the competition in second in 2009.
