Louis Smith facing potential suspension by British Gymnastics

Louis Smith faces "suspension or expulsion" from gymnastics after footage emerged of the four-time Olympic medallist appearing to mock Islam.

Four-time Olympic medallist Louis Smith is facing the prospect of being suspended or expelled by British Gymnastics over a video which appeared to show him mocking Islam.

Footage obtained by The Sun emerged at the weekend showing the 27-year-old, along with retired gymnast Luke Carson, mimicking prayer practices and shouting "Allahu Akbar".

Smith has since apologised for his part in the incident, saying that he is "deeply sorry" for any offence caused by the stunt.

The Rio 2016 pommel horse silver medallist may now face further action, however, as British Gymnastics announced in a statement: "We will be investigating the behaviours reported. Members who break our code of conduct can face suspension or expulsion from our organisation."

Smith, a medal winner in each of the last three Olympic Games, has already been reprimanded twice this year by the sport's governing body.
