British Gymnastics calls for FIG to ban Russian and Belarusian gymnasts from international competitions following the invasion of Ukraine.

British Gymnastics has requested the exclusion of all Russian and Belarusian gymnasts from FIG events following the invasion of Ukraine.

Multiple sporting bodies across the globe have banned athletes from the two nations competing at international tournaments after troops invaded under the orders of president Vladimir Putin.

The International Paralympic Committee reversed their decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete at the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics as neutrals on Thursday, and BG has now urged similar action on the world gymnastics stage.

A statement released on british-gymnastics.org read: "British Gymnastics executive team and Board condemn the actions taken by the Russian military against Ukraine. Our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people, and indeed those people in Russia who are against these actions and will also be severely affected.

"We have written to FIG to demonstrate our solidarity with the people of Ukraine and respectfully ask that the FIG take the decision to exclude Russian and Belarusian gymnasts and officials from all FIG events. We should be united in our stance to do everything we can to bring this war to an end."

The Russian Gymnastics Federation scooped four medals at the 2021 World Artistic Championships in Japan - three of which went to all-around champion Angelina Melnikova.

The 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships will take place from October 29 to November 6 in Liverpool, while the Europeans will be held from August 11-21 in Munich.
