Japan stun China to win gymnastics team gold

Japan shocked favourites China by winning gold in the men's team gymnastics event in the Asian Games on Sunday.

Heading into the six disciplines, China, who have won 123 golds out of a possible 175 since the event was introduced in 1974, were expected to come out on top due to their pedigree in the sport.

However, the favourites suffered a blow when Yang Hak-seon's hamstring injury prevented him from carrying out a more complex vault.

On the floor, Shotaro Shirai, who was competing in his first major international competition, upset the odds by earning a better score than five-time Olympic champion Zou Kai.

Japan came out on top with a score of 355.475, while China were forced to settle for silver on 350.875 and South Korea nabbed bronze on 350.300.
