Harry Maguire history: Defender helps Manchester United set record as Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur possible

Maguire sets history for United in Europa League as final against Spurs still on

Harry Maguire's winning goal for Manchester United against Lyon on Thursday meant the Red Devils became the first team in history to score two goals in the 120th minute of a major European match.

United managed to beat Lyon 5-4 and progress into the semi-finals of the Europa League after winning 7-6 on aggregate, though they could have easily been eliminated.

Ruben Amorim's side were leading 2-0 by the half-time interval, but were forced to play extra time after conceding twice in the final 20 minutes of regulation time.

Despite Lyon being reduced to 10 men shortly before the extra 30 minutes, they scored twice more to lead 4-2, but goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Maguire ensured United remained in the competition.

Mainoo and Maguire netted in the 120th and 121st minutes respectively, and the duo created history, with United standing alone as the only side to have scored twice in the 120th minute or later in a major European competition.

What does the result mean for United?

The victory has set up a semi-final clash against La Liga side Athletic Bilbao, who will be keen to reach the final given it will be staged in their stadium.

However, United's progression also means that there is still a possibility of an all-English final, with Tottenham Hotspur beating Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 in the second leg of their quarter-final tie on Thursday, winning 2-1 on aggregate.

Spurs will be considered favourites against semi-final opponents Bodo/Glimt, who became the first Norwegian side to reach the final four of a major European tournament.

Should United and Tottenham reach the final of the Europa League, the encounter is likely to be a fiercely contested match considering the winner would be awarded a place in the Champions League.

A victory for Amorim may help from a financial perspective and provide him with more funds with which to improve his struggling squad in the summer.

As for Spurs, boss Ange Postecoglou has faced significant scrutiny this term, and winning the Europa League could feasibly save his job.

It should be noted that United have already played Tottenham three times this campaign and have lost all three matchups, and they are winless in their last six meetings with the Londoners.
