DC United have closed the gap on New York Red Bulls in the MLS Eastern Conference with a crushing 4-1 victory at the RFK Stadium.

Chris Pontius broke the deadlock in the eighth minute after catching Thierry Henry in possession and driving home a 25-yard shot.

Pontius then doubled DC's advantage just after the half-hour mark after gathering Maicon Santos's deflected cross.

Nick DeLeon's deflected effort put the hosts out of sight in the 36th minute and DC headed into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.

Pontius wrapped up his hat-trick in 69th minute before Henry scored a 72nd-minute consolation goal from a free kick.
