Robbie Savage: 'Manchester United should sell Wayne Rooney and buy Cristiano Ronaldo'

Robbie Savage thinks that Manchester United should sell Wayne Rooney and try to buy Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Robbie Savage believes that Manchester United should sell Wayne Rooney to raise funds to try to buy Cristiano Ronaldo.

The England striker's future has been called into question of late after he was named as a substitute for United's 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

It was Ronaldo who grabbed the winner for Madrid on the night, and Savage thinks that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson should look to move Rooney on to facilitate a move for the Portuguese forward.

"With two years left on his current deal, Rooney would probably command £35m in the transfer market," Savage wrote in his column in The Mirror.

"Take a deep breath and sell him, then ask [club owners] the Glazers for another £20m on top and you could bring back Ronaldo, or buy Gareth Bale.

"Do either, and the owners would get their money back in replica shirt sales within weeks. It's an incredible scenario, but such is the genius of Fergie that he will surely have pondered whether to cash in."

Ferguson recently stated that Rooney will still be at Old Trafford next season.
