Man United, Man City, Real Madrid 'to battle for Fernandez'

Manchester United, Manchester City and Real Madrid are all set to battle for the signature of River Plate midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to a report.

The 21-year-old has made a bright start to the 2022 campaign, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in 18 appearances across all competitions.

Fernandez refused to be drawn on speculation surrounding his future when he spoke to the media last month, insisting that he remains 'humble' and vows to continue growing as a player.

According to Argentinian news outlet Clarin, Man United, Man City and Real Madrid have all expressed their interest in signing the midfielder, who is believed to have a €20m (£17m) release clause in his contract.

United's incoming boss Erik ten Hag is set to be at the forefront of a major overhaul at Old Trafford this summer, and the Dutchman is believed to have identified Fernandez as a potential target to bolster his squad.

The Red Devils' rivals Man City – who have already agreed a deal to sign Fernendez's teammate Julian Alvarez this summer – are also contemplating a move for the midfielder, with both Fernandinho and Ilkay Gundogan set to leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season.

Los Blanos, meanwhile, are also in the running to sign the Argentina Under-20s international, who is under contract at River Plate until June 2025.
