Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-0 West Bromwich Albion

Sports Mole takes a closer look at how each player performed during Manchester United's 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League.

Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Jesse Lingard's first league goal for the Red Devils opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, before Juan Mata netted from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

The result has kept Man United fourth in the league, while West Brom, who had Gareth McAuley sent off for bringing Anthony Martial to the ground during the penalty incident, remain in the bottom half of the table.

Here, Sports Mole has taken a closer look at how each player performed in Manchester.

MAN UNITED

Goal

David de Gea: Did not have a single save to make during what was a comfortable afternoon for the Spaniard. Came under some pressure late on, but had no real problems from high crosses. (6/10)

Defence

Ashley Young: Given the nod at right-back, but did not make much of an impact in the final third. There was no sign of the Englishman's usual willingness to drive forward. Subbed in the 62nd minute. (6/10)

Chris Smalling: Had another excellent game at the back for Louis van Gaal's side. Has been one of the best centre-backs in the league this season and his strong form continued in this game. (7/10)

Daley Blind: Another classy performance from the Dutchman, who showed his excellent passing range from a deep area. Not the toughest game he has faced this season, but was nice and calm. (7/10)

Marcos Rojo: The Argentine's return to form has come at the right time following Luke Shaw's long-term problem. Strong in the tackle and delivered some excellent crosses when he ventured forward. (7/10)

Midfield

Bastian Schweinsteiger: Man-of-the-match performance from the German, who completely controlled the tempo from a deep position. Everything good about the game came through the midfielder. (8/10)

Michael Carrick: Was not as dominant as Schweinsteiger, but was his usual tidy self in the middle of the park. Kept feeding the ball forward, especially in the second half when the tempo was raised. (7/10)

Juan Mata: Curled an excellent chance wide of the post in the first period, but scored Man United's second from the penalty spot late on. Ended the game well after initially drifting out of it. (7/10)

Attack

Jesse Lingard: Continued to justify his spot in the team with another strong display. Always positive in possession of the ball and opened the scoring with a super finish. Class act. (8/10)

Wayne Rooney: Could not add to his excellent run of goals against West Brom, but in the number 10 role, was more involved in the game and his display was an improvement on recent weeks. (6/10)

Anthony Martial: Fired a super chance straight at Boaz Myhill in the first period, but his pace continued to cause West Brom problems and it was the young Frenchman that won his team's penalty late on. (7/10)

Substitutes

Phil Jones: Somewhat of a surprise that the England international did not start the game following his recent form, but he was tidy at right-back when he replaced Young just past the hour. (6/10)

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson: Special game for the teenager, who came on for his first-team debut in the 76th minute. Did not look out of place at this level after slotting in at left-back. (6/10)

Ander Herrera: His absence from the first XI was not well-received by the Old Trafford crowd and the Spaniard was only given the final 10 minutes to make an impression for the home team. (6/10)

WEST BROM

Goal

Boaz Myhill: Was not called into action on too many occasions, but made a smart stop from Martial in the first period. Could do nothing about either of Man United's goals at Old Trafford. (6/10)

Defence

Craig Dawson: Made a super clearance to deny Lingard a free header in the first period and also provided an excellent cross to set up a chance for Saido Berahino in the second half. (7/10)

Jonny Evans: Made a good impression on his return to Man United. Put in a number of strong challenges in the first period and was also strong late on when the hosts turned the screw. (7/10)

Gareth McAuley: Alongside Evans, put in a good performance, but the experienced centre-back did not complete the game after picking up a red card for fouling Martial inside the penalty box late on. (6/10)

Chris Brunt: Once again deployed in the left-back role and he put in a strong performance. Fired a free kick wide of the post late in the first period and was prepared to drive into the final third. (6/10)

Midfield

Claudio Yacob: Worked very hard in the middle of the park as he protected his back four, but the 28-year-old perhaps should have been a little better in possession of the ball. (6/10)

Darren Fletcher: Struggled to make his mark in a midfield that Schweinsteiger controlled for long spells. Rightly got an excellent reception from the home supporters following his wonderful service. (6/10)

James Morrison: Worked extremely hard in the middle of the pitch, but did not have enough of the ball to demonstrate his passing qualities. Was replaced by Saido Berahino for the final 20 minutes. (6/10)

Attack

James McClean: Was tasked with providing support to Salomon Rondon, but the winger just did not see enough of the ball in the final third. Struggled to make his mark for long spells of the contest. (6/10)

Salomon Rondon: Hardly touched the ball in the first period, but was more involved in the early stages of the second half. Worked hard, just never had enough service from his teammates. (6/10)

Stephane Sessegnon: Did not really get into the game until the second half, when his weaving runs started to cause some problems. Should have offered more than he did in Manchester. (6/10)

Substitutes

Rickie Lambert: Has not had much football this season and therefore does not really look up to speed at this stage of the campaign. Provided a presence for the final 20 minutes though. (6/10)

Saido Berahino: Had a glorious chance to level the scores just minutes after entering, but headed wide from close range. Certainly made the Baggies more of a threat in the final third. (6/10)

Callum McManaman: Came on at left-back for the final five minutes, but did not have many chances to break forward for the visitors. Perhaps should have been introduced at an earlier stage. (6/10)
