A High Court judge has thrown out a damages claim made by Ryan Giggs against The Sun.
The claim related to an article published in April of last year concerning an extra-marital affair with former Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas.
An injunction was made preventing the identification of the Manchester United winger but he was still widely identified as the unnamed footballer on social networking sites.
In arguing their case, the newspaper said that the alleged breach of privacy claim was "dead in the water" and it was dismissed accordingly by Mr Justice Tugendhat.
Giggs recently consented at the High Court to being named as the footballer behind the injunction made last year.
