Man United suffer fresh injury blow ahead of season-defining Europa League showdown with Lyon

Fresh injury blow for Amorim as Man United face season-defining contest

Manchester United centre-back Ayden Heaven has 'suffered a slight setback' in his recovery from an ankle injury, with the teenager not present during the club's training session on Wednesday morning.

Heaven's season looked to be in doubt when he suffered what looked to be a severe ankle injury against Leicester City before the March international break, but he was back on the bench against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday.

The former Arsenal youngster was again seemingly set to be involved against Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday, but according to journalist Chris Wheeler, "a slight setback" led to him missing Wednesday's session.

As a result, Heaven is set to be unavailable alongside fellow defender Matthijs de Ligt, who has missed the team's last three matches with a foot problem.

Jonny Evans was able to train on Wednesday, with the experienced centre-back in line to make a matchday squad for the first time since the middle of December, but Joshua Zirkzee, as expected, was not present.

Zirkzee limped off the field during the Premier League clash with Newcastle, having suffered a hamstring problem.

Amorim will be asked about the Netherlands international during his press conference on Wednesday, but it is believed that the forward could be absent for the remainder of the season with the issue.

The extent of De Ligt's issue is unclear at this stage of proceedings, while Lisandro Martinez faces a battle to return before the end of the year due to a severe knee problem.

Amad Diallo is on course to return from an ankle injury in the near future, though, while the recent issue suffered by midfielder Toby Collyer is not believed to be serious.

Amorim faces a major goalkeeping decision for Thursday season-defining contest, with Andre Onana pushing to return after being dropped from the squad against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Onana made two mistakes in Man United's 2-2 draw with Lyon in the first leg of the quarter-final last week.
