Sergio Aguero's record vs. Manchester United

Sergio Aguero's record vs. Manchester United

Manchester City have the chance to extend their lead over closest challengers Manchester United to 11 points this weekend when the two sides face off at Old Trafford.

The Citizens have been in inspired form all campaign and are one win away from a record 14 in a row in a single season, surpassing the record previously held by Arsenal and Chelsea.

Key to the visitors' chances at the Theatre of Dreams is striker Sergio Aguero who, despite having to battle Gabriel Jesus for a starting spot these days, still boasts some of the most impressive scoring stats on the continent.

In the top flight alone, Aguero has nine goals in 10 starts to place him third - behind Mohamed Salah (12) and Harry Kane (10) in the divisional scoring charts.

Ahead of one of the biggest Manchester derby meetings ever, Sports Mole takes a closer look at how the Argentina international has fared in previous games against the Red Devils.

Boasting the best minutes-per-goal ratio of any striker in Premier League history, it is unsurprising that Aguero has proved to be a real menace to United during his six-and-a-half years in English football.

All in all, the 29-year-old has scored seven goals in nine top-flight meetings against the division's most-successful ever side, averaging one for every 89 minutes that he is on the field.

That does not make good reading for United fans, as Aguero failed to find the net in the most recent encounter - a bland goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium in April - and was also unsuccessful in the 1-0 loss for his side in March 2016.

In fact, Aguero last netted a league goal against this weekend's opponents 31 months ago when City fell to a 4-2 loss, firing blanks in two matches and missing two others through injury and suspension since then.

Still, seven goals in nine Premier League matches is a positive return in a fixture of this magnitude, particularly when considering that those goals have helped the Citizens to five wins and a draw during that time.

Away from the league it is a different matter, though, with the Independiente product finding himself on the losing side in two previous cup fixtures - 1-0 in last season's EFL Cup fourth-round tie and 3-2 in the third round of the 11-12 edition.

Aguero scored in the latter of those games, pulling back a second goal for his side after falling 3-0 down inside 38 first-half minutes, but those losses have skewed his win rate against United somewhat.

The only other meeting between the two sides over the last six seasons came in the 2011-12 Community Shield, which Aguero watched from the bench just weeks after joining the club from Atletico Madrid in what has proved to be one of the best deals in Premier League history.
