Erling Braut Haaland will be looking to break a Champions League scoring record held by Ruud van Nistelrooy when Manchester City travel to Bayern Munich in the second leg of their quarter-final on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old is enjoying a remarkable debut campaign with the Citizens and has already broken a plethora of goalscoring records following his summer switch from Borussia Dortmund.

Haaland netted a brace in Man City's 3-1 victory at home against Leicester City last weekend to equal Mohamed Salah's all-time record of 32 goals in a single 38-game Premier League season.

The Norwegian has now scored an impressive 14 goals in his last six games across all competitions, with his latest double increasing his overall goal tally for the season to 47 in just 40 appearances.

Haaland is currently the top scorer in this season's Champions League with 11 strikes, including a goal in City's commanding 3-0 first-leg triumph over Bayern at the Etihad Stadium last week.

Haaland's 11 goals is his best return in a single Champions League campaign, but should he find the net again on Wednesday, he will equal the goalscoring record in a single season for a Premier League player in the competition.

Former Manchester United striker Van Nistelrooy currently holds the record after scoring 12 Champions League goals for the Red Devils in the 2002-03 season.

Haaland can break Van Nistelrooy's record outright with at least a brace at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday versus a Bayern side who he has had plenty of joy in front of goal against in recent years.

Indeed, the Norwegian has scored six goals in his eight competitive encounters against the Bavarian giants, including five with former club Dortmund between January 2020 and June 2022.

Five-time Champions League winner Cristiano Ronaldo currently holds the record for the most goals ever scored in a single campaign with 17, and Haaland will fancy his chances of surpassing the Portuguese's feat considering his electric form and Man City's chances of progressing all the way to this year's final.

Haaland has particularly impressive in front of goal on home soil, netting 33 of his 47 goals at the Etihad, while the remaining 14 have been scored on the road.

However, Haaland was unable to score in his last two Champions League visits to Germany this season, firstly drawing a blank in a goalless group-stage draw against former club Dortmund in October before failing to find the net in a 1-1 last-16 first-leg draw at RB Leipzig.

Nevertheless, manager Pep Guardiola has acknowledged Haaland's "impressive" form throughout this season and admitted after City's win over Leicester that he is keen to see the striker break as many records as possible.

"I want, I desire that he breaks all the records possible because if he scores a lot of goals that means it helps us," Guardiola told mancity.com

"It's impressive and we still have eight or 10 games and he's close to breaking all of them."

Guardiola himself is also seeking to break a Champions League record on Wednesday as the Citizens endeavour to book their place in the semi-finals for the third consecutive season.
