Liverpool's owners reportedly tell Jurgen Klopp to downgrade the importance of cup competitions ahead of the club's 2019-20 campaign

Liverpool's owners have reportedly told Jurgen Klopp to downgrade the importance of cup competitions in order to focus on winning the Premier League this season.

Klopp oversaw the club's sixth European triumph by beating Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final, but the Reds were beaten to the Premier League title by Manchester City.

The club's success in Europe last season has meant they will take on extra fixtures for the 2019-20 campaign through their involvement in the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

According to The Mirror, Liverpool's owners, the United States-based Fenway Group, are desperate for a league title - something they have not won since 1990 - and have therefore asked Klopp to place less importance on cup competitions this season.

Klopp notably fielded a young team for Liverpool's FA Cup third-round defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers last season, and also went out at the same stage of the Carabao Cup at home to Chelsea.

Liverpool began their quest for a first league title in 29 years with a thumping 4-1 win over Norwich City at Anfield on Friday night.
