Steven Gerrard: Kenny Dalglish will always be my idol

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that Kenny Dalglish will always be his idol following the Scot's departure from the club.

The Reds legend was sacked as manager on Wednesday after 16 months in charge at Anfield.

"I am very sad to see Kenny leave our club," Gerrard told Liverpool's official website. "He is my idol and will always be my idol and I would like to express my thanks and appreciation for what he has done for my career."

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan confirmed on Thursday that manager Roberto Martinez is due to hold talks with the Merseysiders over the vacant role.
