Finland edge past Faroe Islands

Finland edge past Faroe Islands

Finland kept alive their slim hopes of qualifying for Euro 2016 by edging to a 1-0 victory over the Faroe Islands this evening.

The hosts took the lead midway through the first half when Joel Pohjanpalo headed in from close range after Alexander Ring's curling effort had hit the post.

Jere Uronen almost doubled their lead on the stroke of half time, but his strike went narrowly over the bar.

The visitors showed more attacking threat after the break, and Kaj Leo Bartalstovu came close with a volley that flashed just wide of the post.

However, the Faroes were unable to find an equalising goal as they slipped to their sixth defeat of the qualifying campaign.

The result means that Finland are fourth in their qualifying group and three points behind third-placed Hungary, with just two games left to play.
